Willow realised that theyâd all felt responsible, and maybe that wasnât necessarily a bad thing. It was good to learn from what had happened, but it was also good to share their regret, to remember it wasnât just Willow who had been fooled.
âWe were all tricked by Silas. But I canât let that define who I am and make me never want to help again. That way he wins once more. By going to the mountains and finding the Craegun, there is a chance to put things right, to get the elf staff, save Twist and stop a war. Iâve got to at least try.â
Feathering stared at her as if he were making up his mind. âYouâre right.â
Essential nodded, then pushed up her glasses. âMad as it seems, this might be the only way.â
Moreg had been looking contemplative. âI do like to think things through carefully, but Willow is right. Having weighed up all the options, I too can see no way forward but this. Could I take the half-moon to Wolkana on Willowâs behalf and attempt to bring Silas out? Perhaps. But the elf staff is the most powerful tool in Starfellâs history, even without its ability to take magic away, and, so long as Silas has it at his disposal, I would have no hope of defeating him. The clearest way to stop him is to remove the staff from him altogether, instantly. That means Willow must steal it back, using her ability to make things disappear, and it seems there is only one option left to restore her magic. Plus, according to what Sometimes has perceived, even the magic of Starfell itself is encouraging Willow on this path.â
The witch met her eyes. âYou wonât face the Craegun alone, Willow. I will help.â
âMe anâ all,â said Oswin.
âAnd me,â said Essential.
âOf course,â said Feathering.
âThank you, everyone,â said Willow, touched.
There was the sound of footsteps from behind, and they saw Sometimes and Pimpernell coming outside to join them.
The hedge witch looked solemn. âI think itâll be best if I take Beroc back ter me tower, where I can better care for âim. âSides, me other patients be needinâ me.â
Willow and the others nodded, and they helped to carry Beroc outside to the Ambulbroom. Pimpernell clicked a lever to collapse one of the tall upright chairs into a stretcher, and Willow and Essential strapped him in securely.
Then they all said their farewells and watched as Pimpernell left, the Ambulbroom flying against the late-afternoon sky, which was beginning to turn from apricot to gold.
Sometimes touched Willowâs shoulder, making her jump.
âSorry,â he said, running a hand bashfully through his white hair. His large blue eyes looked sad but earnest. âSo youâve got them to agree to go to the mountains of Nach?â he asked.
Willow wondered if heâd guessed or read her memories. It didnât matter. She nodded, and he smiled.
âI want to come too, truly, but I feel that there is something I must try here first, for the Great Wisperia Tree. I donât think I should leave it.
